Benzodiazepine Detox

Benzodiazepine drugs such as diazepam, lorazepam or valium are normally prescribed for short periods to ease symptoms such as anxiety or sleeping difficulties. Sometimes the symptoms users are left with after long-term use can be worse than the symptoms for which they were originally given.

It is possible to become dependent on benzodiazepine even if the drug has only been used for a couple of months. People sometimes become dependent inadvertently. Even If the drug has been taken as prescribed by the GP’s instructions, there could still be some experience of significant withdrawal symptoms if the use of the drug is stopped abruptly.

There is a risk that users can become dependent on these drugs if they are taken for more than four weeks. This will furthermore bring the issue of withdrawal symptoms once the use of these drugs is ceased. Such symptoms may include panic attacks, feelings of unreality, sweating, insomnia, headaches, palpitations, muscle spasms, oversensitivity to light and in some cases convulsions may occur. One of the most worrying symptoms of long-term benzodiazepine use is depersonalization. It is common for a user to experience an episode of not feeling quite real, another description is that the users have described “my arms don't feel connected to my body," or "when I'm in a group of people I somehow feel outside of myself." All of these out of the ordinary descriptions suggest the user is experiencing depersonalization.

It is most common for the process to be completed by slowly reducing (tapering) the benzodiazepine over time. Additional medications may be prescribed to address any symptoms that may occur as a result of this tapering.

The Referral Network can advise a user on the most suitable treatment for the detox of this drug, we take into account a user's personal circumstances such as amount of use of the drug and length of time this has been abused, users location and funds.

Any center which we refer a user to will be professional, knowledgeable as well as sensitive to a user's needs.
